Students in East Meadow High School’s Civil War class, as well as members of the school’s Rho Kappa National Social Studies Honor Society and Model Congress, received a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to attend a three-day American History Tour, in March, that included visits to New York City, Philadelphia and Gettysburg. During the tour, the 24 students visited Lower Manhattan’s Freedom Tower and National September 11 Memorial & Museum, as well as Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. They also went on a ghost tour and battlefield tours in Gettysburg.
Sheena Rachel Jacobs, social studies chairperson at the high school, said the purpose of the trip was to bring history alive for students and help them better understand the nation’s founding fathers.

“[The students] came to understand the founding fathers’ trials and tribulations, their willingness to learn and persevere, and how they held steadfast to civic duty,” Jacobs explained. “They now realize how America became the successful democratic nation it is, due to our founding fathers.”
