Fifth grade students in Elena DiCocco's class at Barnum Woods Elementary School were unable to hold their annual Veteran's Day ceremony this year, but still honored them by constructing symbolic red poppies and studying "In Flanders Fields," a poem written by John McCrae during World War I. Students were also given poppy seeds to plant on their own at home.

Additionally, Mary Macaluso's fifth grade class collaborated on a patriotic piece of art depicting a saluting American soldier. Each student drew and colored a portion of the photo, which was then combined to create the image.
