Students at East Meadow’s Parkway Elementary School focused on the critical topic of fire prevention on Oct. 4. Firefighters from the Wantagh Fire Department visited the building to teach students to stop emergencies before they start and also how to react in hazardous situations.
Kindergarteners, first and second graders attended one assembly, while those in grades 3-5 took part in another session with content tailored to their age groups. The presenters discussed the importance of establishing safe meeting places and escape plans, and addressed ways to stay out of harm’s way and call for help when needed.
Third and fourth graders also toured a smokehouse that was set up outside. They walked through a trailer that was designed to simulate a smoke-filled room and practiced exiting safely through the window. The students were shocked at the destructive power of a fire as they observed a melted plastic push-and-ride car.
