EMHS Student Musicians Connect With Younger Students Through Music Mentors Program

Music Mentors was implemented to assist performing music students with the transition from Woodland Middle School to East Meadow High School. Through interactions with current student musicians from the high school, middle school musicians make connections with their future peers and become familiar with the high school staff and facilities.  This interaction results in a heightened level of comfort and familiarity in what can often be an intimidating experience.
Phase one of the program consisted of a visit by EMHS Mentors, current East Meadow High School music students, to Woodland Middle School. The day included a concert featuring the Steel Pan Band, the Orchestra, the Chorus and school Marching Band, followed by a student-lead question and answer session. At the conclusion of the concert, the majority of the high school students returned to EMHS while several mentors spent the rest of the day working with lesson groups and the performing ensembles at Woodland.
Phase two of the program focused on collaborative activities. Woodland band students joined members of the EMHS JETS Marching Band at their homecoming football game on Oct. 26 and played pep band material side by side with their high school counterparts. Chorus members are planning a collaborative Holiday Caroling Tour of the elementary schools while orchestra students are planning a side by side concert in the future.
The program will culminate in January with the middle school students visiting East Meadow High School for a tour of the facilities and another concert featuring a different set of performing ensembles.
