East Meadow, W.T. Clarke hold inaugural Flags for Freedom ceremonies

Both high schools in the East Meadow School District recently honored its local veterans during their inaugural Flags for Freedom ceremonies. W.T. Clarke High School held its ceremony on May 27, while East Meadow High School held its ceremony on May 28.

“Today, we honor flags not just as a national emblem, but as symbols of freedom and how those symbols take on added meaning here in East Meadow,” said Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Rosner. “Flags declare identity, unity, and most of all, the freedom of people to exist, to believe, to speak, and to dream.”

Student musicians performed numerous songs to recognize all of the veterans in attendance. Additionally, both schools recognized students and educators who have family members that served our country.

“I’m often asked what’s best way to thank a veteran and my answer is simple,” said American Legion Memorial Post 1082 veteran Leonard Volpe. “When you see someone in uniform or wearing a hat that represents their service, simply approach them and say thank you. That is more than enough.”

At the end of both ceremonies, flags were gifted to each graduating high school senior. Each flag was folded on May 10 during a collaboration with the East Meadow American Legion Memorial Post 1082, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9592, active-duty service personnel, along with students and residents of the East Meadow community.
