On May 29, fourth and fifth graders at George McVey Elementary School in East Meadow competed in the school’s spelling bee.

Students filled the bleachers in McVey’s gymnasium to watch their peers spell a variety of words. Principal Kerry Anne Dunne emceed the event, Mr. Trionfo served as the moderator, and teachers Ms. Conklin, Ms. Sulwalski, Ms. Talbot, and Ms. Tallarita participated as the judges. Additionally, teachers Ms. Mauri, Ms. Leonardi and Ms. O’Neill coached the students leading up to this year’s competition.

After six rounds, fifth grader Ruth Varghese emerged as the winner of this year’s Spelling Bee after she spelled the final word, gladiatorial.
