Finger snaps filled the air on Dec. 17 as fifth-grade poets at Meadowbrook Elementary School in East Meadow stepped into the spotlight for the school’s third annual Poetry Open Mic Celebration.
Held in the school’s all-purpose room, the event transformed the space into a vibrant atmosphere where creativity, confidence, and self-expression took center stage. In the weeks leading up to the celebration, students immersed themselves in the art of poetry, exploring a wide range of forms and techniques. Whether it was apostrophe, anaphora, tone, rhyme scheme, villanelle, parallel structure, compare/contrast, list poems, or implied metaphors, each performance reflected both careful study and personal voice.
An enthusiastic audience of teachers, classmates, district administrators, Principal Danielle Lasher and Assistant Principal Meredith Broxmeyer showed their appreciation in true poetry-slam fashion — snapping fingers to applaud each young poet’s performance. Adding to the experience, fourth-grade students attended the celebration as they listened, learned, and drew inspiration from their older peers.
The event not only celebrated fifth graders’ talents, but also planted creative seeds for the poets of the future.
