More than a dozen students from W.T. Clarke High School’s DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapter in East Meadow competed at this year's DECA States competition in Rochester, held from March 4-6.

Students competed in events focused on marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Through activities such as preparing written projects and completing impromptu role plays, DECA’s competitive events allow students to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations, helping them develop skills that prepare them for both college and future careers. These events are aligned with the National Curriculum Standards within the career clusters of marketing, business management and administration, finance, and hospitality and tourism.

While attending the New York State Conference, students also took part in a variety of leadership and career development academies that help equip them with the skills needed for success beyond the classroom.

As a result, Clarke will send 13 underclassmen to Atlanta, Georgia, from April 25-28 to compete at DECA’s 76th annual International Career Development Conference as they placed in the top three in numerous categories. Congratulations to Clarke’s DECA students for their excellence in the following categories:

·         Penelope Hawkes and Marissa Martin â€“ Fourth Place in Sports & Entertainment Marketing TDM

·         Shreya Satpathy â€“ First Place in Financial Consulting

·         Adiba Zaman â€“ Second Place in Professional Selling: Marketing

·         Minah Cho and Nusaybah Kabir â€“ Sixth Place in Business Services Operations Research

·         Nathan Laurette, Jake Thakkar, Kieran Reynolds â€“ Fourth Place in Sports & Entertainment Operations Research     

·         Sofia Barbarisi, Ethan Follick, Ava Ruperto â€“ Sixth Place in Career Development Project

·         Ruhi Patwal â€“ First Place in Start-up Business Plan

Clarke’s DECA chapter, led by chapter advisers Joseph Pavia and Carol Kelly, also had an additional 46 top 10 overall placements. More than 25,000 high school students, teacher advisers, business professionals and alumni are scheduled to gather for several days of DECA excitement.

The district wishes Clarke’s DECA chapter the best of luck at this year’s national conference.
