Representatives from the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter collaborated with fourth graders at Parkway Elementary School in East Meadow to help them kick off their weeklong PawPalooza celebration on March 23.

Parkway Elementary School in East Meadow proudly hosted “PawPalooza: A Week of Paws and Purpose — Helping Animals, Building Teamwork, Celebrating Kindness” during the week of March 23.

The weeklong, student-led initiative highlighted compassion, leadership, and community engagement, all inspired by the efforts of Parkway’s fourth-grade student leaders. After reading “Chi Chi’s Story,” students were moved by the reality that animals can be mistreated and felt compelled to make a difference. Channeling their passion into action, they created PawPalooza, a schoolwide event aimed at supporting animals in need.

Together, the students developed a comprehensive plan that included an informative assembly, themed spirit days, creative activities, and a donation drive. Each grade level was assigned specific items to contribute, supporting the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. The students also crafted a mission statement to guide their efforts:

“The mission is to help animals get what they need to feel comfortable in their temporary home. We are going to try to donate as much as we can to the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. We are also going to have a fun week learning about and supporting animals.”

PawPalooza kicked off on March 23, with two student-led assemblies, entirely planned and organized by the fourth-grade team. Following each presentation, representatives from the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter spoke with students about therapy dogs, pet safety, and responsible pet ownership.

The week’s schedule also included activities such as dressing up as their favorite animal, a poster creation, mascot chant and practice, and a cafeteria parade and donation day.

Beyond the excitement and school spirit, PawPalooza reflects a powerful message about student leadership and the importance of listening to young voices. Through creativity, collaboration, and compassion, these students demonstrated that even the youngest members of a school community can make a meaningful impact.
