The East Meadow High School Class of 2026 celebrated the culmination of their high school journey on June 26 as graduates, surrounded by family, friends, faculty and staff, gathered on the school's football field to mark the beginning of their next chapter.
Throughout the ceremony, speakers encouraged graduates to embrace life's unexpected opportunities, stay true to themselves and remember the people who helped shape their success. The commencement ceremony featured a rendition of the national anthem by the senior chorale, accompanied by students performing the song in American Sign Language. Members of the Board of Education, district administration and school administration joined the graduates in celebrating the milestone.
Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Rosner and Board of Education President Jessica Ricco-Simeone addressed the graduating class. A 2006 East Meadow High School graduate, Ms. Ricco-Simeone reflected on how unexpected opportunities ultimately led her back to the district where her educational journey began.
“Life has a funny way of taking us places we never expected to go, and that is the lesson I hope you take with you today,” Ms. Ricco-Simeone said. “Some of the most meaningful experiences in your life may actually come from doors that you never even planned on opening. I hope you all enjoy the ride, be open to new experiences, take chances, learn from setbacks, celebrate your successes, and trust that every step you take is helping to shape the person you are becoming.”
Student leaders also shared reflections and advice with their classmates. Valedictorian Dennis Calu encouraged graduates to appreciate the moments that make the journey meaningful.
“The moments we’ll cherish most won’t be the perfect ones,” Calu said. “They will be the unexpected conversations, the friendships, the mistakes we laugh about years later, and the ones we never saw coming. I hope that we all work hard, pursue our goals, and embrace new opportunities, but I also hope we make time to enjoy the journey.”
Salutatorian Emily Zheng reminded her classmates to rely on both themselves and the people who have supported them throughout their lives.
“Looking around the field, I see amazing classmates who all have stories and voices that deserve to be told,” Zheng said. “Count on the people who supported you, count on the moments that make you feel alive, and always count on yourself.”
Class President Oscar Lin also addressed the graduating class before Kayla Lederer reflected on her experience serving as one of the district's inaugural ex-officio student board members and encouraged her peers to remain authentic as they pursue their dreams.
“My biggest piece of advice to my fellow graduates would be to just be yourself,” Lederer said. “At the end of the day, it’s your life you’re living, so do what makes you happy, and I promise that every one of us will succeed.”
Before the presentation of diplomas, Principal William Brennan reflected on his first year leading East Meadow High School and praised the graduating class for the legacy they leave behind.
“You have all left your mark on East Meadow High School, and you have helped make my first year as principal one that I will never forget,” Mr. Brennan said. “Wherever your path leads, remember that success is not measured by what you achieve. It is also measured by your character, the relationships you build and the positive differences you make in the lives of others.”
Following the awarding of diplomas, the Class of 2026 celebrated with a cap toss, marking the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, leaving East Meadow High School prepared to soar toward bright futures while carrying the values and memories they built as Jets.
