The playground at Bowling Green Elementary School in East Meadow transformed into an interactive safety hub on July 13 as students in the district’s Extended School Year program spent the day learning from members of the Nassau County Police Department and East Meadow Fire Department.
Police cars, armored vehicles, mounted police horses, a fire engine and a fire department ambulance lined the playground as students rotated through hands-on stations to meet local first responders and discover how they help keep the community safe. Throughout the morning, students eagerly explored emergency vehicles, asked questions and enjoyed memorable interactions with police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel.
Members of the Nassau County Police Department introduced students to their day-to-day responsibilities and gave them an up-close look at police cars, armored vehicles and specialized equipment. Students also had the opportunity to meet the department’s mounted officers and their horses, a highlight of the day for many. As they explored the vehicles and learned about the tools officers use on the job, students gained a better understanding of law enforcement and the important role officers play in the community.
Firefighters from the East Meadow Fire Department shared important fire safety and prevention tips while demonstrating the protective gear they wear when responding to emergencies. Students toured both a fire engine and a fire department ambulance before watching firefighters demonstrate how a firehose is used, offering an exciting look at the work they do to keep the community safe.
To thank their visitors, students presented both departments with handmade thank-you cards and showed their appreciation with smiles, hugs and high fives.
The district extends its sincere thanks to the Nassau County Police Department and East Meadow Fire Department for making the day both educational and unforgettable. Through their engaging demonstrations and meaningful interactions, they helped students build confidence, learn valuable safety lessons and create lasting memories.
