The next generation of scientists got an exciting introduction to the world of genetics and biotechnology during the East Meadow School District's fourth annual CRISPR Science Camp, held Aug. 3-4 at W.T. Clarke High School in partnership with Columbia University.
Designed for incoming sixth graders, the immersive two-day experience gave students an early look at concepts such as DNA, cells, bacteria and gene editing through hands-on laboratory activities. Throughout the camp, East Meadow science teachers worked alongside graduate students from Columbia University's Sternberg Lab, guiding participants as they explored scientific techniques and thought like real researchers.
In addition to the labs, the district's director of mathematics and science, Debra Harley, joined Columbia University Professor Dr. Samuel Sternberg to welcome the young scientists and discuss the unique partnership, highlighting how the program inspires curiosity while exposing students to cutting-edge science at an early age.
By combining expert mentorship with interactive learning, the annual camp continues to spark students' interest in STEM and provide a memorable introduction to scientific discovery.
