Our Barnum Bobcats are “pawsitively “ leaping into fall learning.

The Kindergarteners have had an exciting month of October!  They enjoyed Fire Prevention Week and learned a lot at the Fire Prevention Assembly provided by the expert firefighters of the East Meadow Fire Department.  It was so exciting getting up close to the fire trucks!  For Picture Day, the children dressed up, smiled, and looked fabulous in their adorable outfits.  The Kindergarten classes completed their Nursery Rhyme Unit in CKLA and held a Nursery Rhyme Olympics in the gym. Everyone enjoyed having races that correlated to some of the nursery rhymes that they had learned throughout the unit. What a fun time!  Throughout this month, they have been reading about fall, using their five senses to explore their surrounds, making fall crafts, and talking about all things pumpkin. The students loved picking pumpkins from the beautifully arranged Pumpkin Patch from the PTA.  The Kindergarten students are eagerly awaiting their Spooky Stroll and parties on October 31st. What a fabulous way to end this exciting month!

The first graders have been busy learning and having lots of fun!  The children attended the Fire Safety Prevention Assembly. They learned important fire safety tips and loved getting an up-close look at the fire trucks, ladder trucks, and ambulances parked in front of our school.  In ELA, our first graders are learning all about the human body. Through interactive read-alouds and fun activities, they are discovering how different body systems such as the skeletal, muscular, digestive, circulatory, and nervous systems work together to keep us alive and healthy. They are also learning how to take care of their bodies by eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep, keeping clean, and visiting the doctor. This unit helps students understand how their bodies work and how to build healthy habits for life.  In math, the children are working on comparing and ordering numbers. They are learning how to decide which numbers are greater than, less than, or equal to. They are also using open number lines to help order numbers and solve problems. There is lots of hands-on fun and great learning happening in every classroom!  The first graders are looking forward to the upcoming Spooky Stroll and all the excitement it brings. First grade is having a wonderful fall season filled with curiosity, laughter, and lasting memories.

Second graders had a great time picking their very own pumpkins at the Barnum Woods Pumpkin Patch sponsored by the PTA and are looking forward to our Spooky Stroll on October 31st. The second grade classes have been studying Ancient Asian Civilizations in CKLA.  In math, they have been practicing their addition and subtraction fluency as well as learning different strategies for adding and subtracting.

The third graders loved visiting the Barnum Pumpkin Patch and picking out their very own pumpkins! This definitely helped get them into the fall season! Many enjoyed Family Connection Night, spending quality time with their family members! Third graders have officially started learning their multiplication facts. Please review the times tables on a daily basis to ensure they are memorized!  Furthermore, the students are excited to be diving into Animal Classification in CKLA. Happy fall to one and all!

Our fourth graders have been working hard on their personal narratives and are excited to celebrate their writing at their upcoming publishing party! Students have gone through the full writing process — brainstorming, drafting, revising, and polishing their final pieces, and can’t wait to share their finished work with pride.  They also enjoyed Fire Safety Week with the East Meadow Fire Department. Students had the chance to learn important safety tips firsthand and loved seeing the fire trucks and equipment up close. The highlight, as always, was watching the ladder truck lift up some of their favorite teachers high into the sky! A huge thank you to the EMFD for an unforgettable and educational visit.

The fifth grade students recently completed their “Paw Pals” letters, heartfelt messages written to animals currently waiting for adoption at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter. Each student chose an animal to write to, learning about their background and personality before crafting a thoughtful, encouraging letter.  This project combined creative writing with compassion and community connection, helping students see the power of words to make a difference.  In addition, students are working on “Surprise Narratives.” These are imaginative stories that challenge students to include unexpected twists and turns to keep readers guessing! The project focuses on story structure, descriptive language, and creative thinking, while letting students have fun with suspense and creativity.

The student council is wrapping up their classroom representative elections and will begin whole group meetings. The executive board has been working with our district character education committee to embody the six pillars of character.  A special video made by our executive board will be shared with the school shortly.

In library, students of all ages have been learning how to use SORA, an online reading resource.  Additionally, students have been engaging in lessons that embody empathy, respect and citizenship. Many students enjoyed new books that the library acquired, representing holidays they recently celebrated, such as Diwali. It has been wonderful seeing students connect with these texts, sharing them with their family and friends.

Again, a big thank you to the PTA for making our pumpkin patch such a fun and memorable experience. The children had the best time picking out pumpkins and enjoying the beautiful fall day.  Thank you to the PTA for picture day!  All the Barnum students are now looking forward to Boosterthon!  As you can see, fall is full of fun for all our Barnum Bobcats!
