Our Barnum Bobcats are “pawsitively“ leaping into learning in 2026!

NEWS REPORT FROM OUR KINDERGARTEN:

The Kindergarten classes would like to wish all families a Happy New Year and thank the PTA for the Brain Challenge Assembly and the upcoming Jared Campbell Assembly.

December was such a fun month! We shared our family homework assignments about family traditions. It was exciting to learn what families do during that special time. We also enjoyed focusing on our gingerbread theme. We read many books and completed fun activities and projects.

We welcomed the season of winter and look forward to doing more winter activities related to snow and snowmen. We are also excited about sharing our New Year’s goals for this year.

We would like to thank all of the class moms for their hard work and dedication in organizing successful winter parties for our classes.  Thank you also to the parents and family members who joined us in our classrooms. The children had so much fun decorating their special snowman cookies!

We wish all of you a healthy and Happy New Year!

Bring on 2026!

NEWS REPORT FROM OUR FIRST GRADE:

Happy New Year to All!

The first-grade children are ringing in the New Year with enthusiasm by making resolutions and setting both academic and personal goals for the year ahead.

In ELA, our read-alouds and discussions are taking the children on an exciting journey into space! They are learning about the solar system and Earth’s place in it, including the sun, moon, stars, and planets, and how Earth’s movement causes day and night. Later in the unit, we will explore the history of space exploration, learning about NASA, astronauts, and missions to the moon. This unit builds strong listening, vocabulary, and comprehension skills.

In math, students are growing confident with addition. They are learning to count on to add numbers, use doubles and doubles facts, and apply helpful strategies like making a ten and using ten frames. Students are also practicing solving real-world addition problems and explaining their thinking. We’re excited to see their progress and enthusiasm for math!

Recently, the children enjoyed a variety of special events and celebrations. They were thrilled to attend two field trips- one to the Nassau County Museum of Art and another to the Tiles Center to see the live performance of "Ada Twist, Scientist"! They attended  the winter concerts, participated in fun winter celebrations, and even shopped at the Holiday Boutique.

We would like to extend a big thank-you to the PTA for bringing back Hollyrock Entertainment’s “Brain Challenge” TV Game Show. The children had an absolute blast participating in this fun and educational assembly.

Additionally, we are so grateful for the thoughtful gift of special supply cases- the children can’t wait to pack them with “Pencils and Positivity”!

We look forward to an exciting year ahead!

NEWS REPORT FROM OUR SECOND GRADE:

Second grade is happy to be back to school after the holiday break.  We all enjoyed shopping at the Holiday Boutique for our family and friends.   We are studying about the War of 1812 and will be starting cycles in nature next.  We have been practicing subtraction with and without regrouping.  We had so much fun at the Brain Challenge assembly, and look forward to Jared Campell and the Islander assembly this month!

NEWS REPORT FROM OUR THIRD GRADE:

The 3rd graders enjoyed seeing Corey the Dribbler once again! His positive message about perseverance and determination to reach goals is always on target! The kids loved shopping for their holiday gifts at the PTA Boutique! Choosing presents for their loved ones and learning to budget are important life skills. The denim pencil cases were a HUGE hit! It is such a useful organizational tool and a wonderful surprise for them! Our annual end of year Brain Challenge assembly is always an amazing experience for the kids! Hula Hooping, dancing, tug of war, and endless trivia fun was a great way to end the 2025 year! Thank you for everything you do for the kids at Barnum Woods. Happy New Year!!

NEWS REPORT FROM OUR FOURTH GRADE:

Fourth grade students have been busy learning, creating, and celebrating culture in meaningful ways this season. As part of our social studies unit, students explored the lives of the Iroquois people and brought their learning to life by building longhouses. The excitement was contagious as students worked collaboratively, asked thoughtful questions, and gained a deeper understanding of Iroquois daily life, traditions, and community values.

Our in-school workshop, Journeys into Native American Territory, was a highlight for many students. The hands-on activities and engaging presentations helped students connect classroom learning to real history, and they truly loved stepping back in time to learn about Native American life in an interactive way.

In ELA, students have been diving into poetry learning about its elements, structure, and creative expression.

To wrap up the season, fourth graders participated in a traditions project where they shared their own family cultures and traditions. Learning about one another’s backgrounds fostered respect, curiosity, and a strong sense of classroom community, making it a meaningful and joyful holiday treat.

NEWS REPORT FROM OUR FIFTH GRADE:

Fifth grade students are refreshed and ready for the second trimester. They are working on new writing pieces that focus on setting goals they hope to achieve during the remainder of their time at Barnum.

As you can see, our Barnum Bobcats have resolved to ring in the New Year right! Happy New Year!
