FEB 26

There is so much to LOVE about Barnum in Feburary!

News from our Kindergarten Teachers: February is a very busy month in kindergarten. We began the month by making predictions for Groundhog Day. The groundhog saw his shadow!  You know what that means! There will be six more weeks of winter. Sorry!

The kindergarten classes prepared for Valentine’s Day. We had fun making Valentine's Day cards and crafts, and we look forward to delivering our valentines at our class parties.

We were excited to be a part of the Cereal Box Challenge this month. We were so happy to see how many cereal boxes were donated to local food pantries. Thank you to all the families that donated, and thank you, K-Kids, for all that you do!

News from our First Grade Teachers: Our first graders are continuing to learn new things and make new friends.

In ELA, the children are exploring the Earth. They are learning about its layers, rocks, minerals, and fossils. They are also focusing on “r-controlled” vowel sounds and practicing reading longer words by breaking them into syllables.

In math, the children are building flexibility with addition. They are learning to add numbers in any order and group numbers in different ways using a variety of math strategies.

Our students learned about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., focusing on kindness, fairness, and respect.

They enjoyed the PAWSitive Power Pep Rally, the inspiring visit from Jared Campbell, and the New York Islanders assemblies. All of these experiences encouraged students to demonstrate great character in our school and kindness towards others.

Students celebrated friendships by exchanging kind words and cards with classmates for Valentine's Day.

News from our Second Grade Teachers: Second grade is finishing learning about the cycles in nature and is looking forward to starting our unit on insects after the winter recess.  We began adding three digit numbers with regrouping in the tens and hundreds.  We enjoyed the New York Islanders assembly that promoted healthy living and loved seeing Sparky, the Islander mascot, at our school.  We are excited for our first field trip in the beginning of March to the Nassau County Museum of Art.

News from our Third Grade Teachers: The third graders enjoyed an old favorite as well as a new, inspirational  assembly last month! Jared Campbell is a perennial favorite with his wit and wisdom, humorous, yet deeply uplifting, lyrics! He is always a fan favorite here at Barnum Woods!

The NY Islanders assembly delivered an inspiring message to the students. Teaching the kids about N.E.T. (Nutrition, Exercise and Teamwork) was a meaningful and important lesson for kids of all ages!

News from our Fourth Grade Teachers: There is a lot to celebrate in fourth grade!

In ELA, students recently wrapped up a poetry unit, crafting their own poems while experimenting with poetic devices such as figurative language, rhyme, repetition, anaphora, alliteration, personification, and hyperbole. They are now moving into a new CKLA unit focused on our planet, where reading and writing will center around Earth science and geology.

In social studies, students are diving into history as they study early explorers searching for the Northwest Passage and learning how these journeys led to the establishment of early colonies in what we now know as New York. The students are making exciting connections between the past and our present-day state.

Science has been full of energy! Students are exploring energy and energy transfer through hands-on investigations like downhill racers, rocket rulers, and spool racers, allowing them to see energy in action and understand how it moves and changes.

In math, fractions are fun! Students are building strong fraction skills through engaging lessons that help them make sense of parts of a whole in meaningful ways.

News from our Fifth Grade Teachers: On Friday, February 6th, fifth grade students attended a field trip to Woodland Middle School. They were toured around by eighth grade students who showed them what they will experience as students there next year. The assistant principals, 6th grade guidance counselors, and several teachers introduced themselves and made the students feel welcomed right away! We will be returning to Woodland in March to watch their performance of Seussical.

Fifth grade students created two beautiful bulletin boards showcasing writing pieces about why they love Barnum. Many shared meaningful experiences, from exciting assemblies to feeling safe, supported, and valued by their teachers.

News from our Librarians: In the library, Ms. Guglielmo and Ms. Lindquist are working on research skills with the students.  Here are the topics that each grade is proudly learning about: fifth grade - The Titanic, fourth grade - New Year's Celebrations Around the World, third grade - The Winter Olympics, second grade - Cardinals, and first grade and kindergarten are enjoying seasonal literature!

News from our Student Council Leaders: The Barnum Woods Student Council and its advisors, Ms. Guglielmo and Mrs. Curcio, would like to thank those who participated in their Pietro's fundraiser. The next fundraiser will be the "Paw-fect Guess Challenge". This will begin on February 23rd. An e-mail will be sent out with all the information about this new event.

On behalf of all the students and staff, we would like to thank the PTA for the Jared Campbell and NY Islander Assemblies. We wish everyone a happy, healthy, wonderful, relaxing winter recess. We hope you take this time to create special memories with family and friends.
