April may bring May flowers, but it aslo brought plenty of rewarding experiences and new discoveries for our students!
News Report from our Kindergarten Teachers: The children had a great time dressing up for school, reading books with their families, and tracking their minutes for PARP. They also enjoyed shopping at the Scholastic Book Fair as well as seeing Llama Llama visiting us from Barnes and Noble. The Kindergarten teachers and students would like to thank the PTA for the bookmarks and pencils and send our appreciation to all the PARP reader volunteers. This month in kindergarten, the students have been focusing on things related to spring. They have been paying attention to all the beautiful things happening to Earth. For Earth Day, they have been discussing ways to keep the earth clean and green by reducing, reusing, and recycling. They have been doing many activities related to this special day. Earth Day gives us the opportunity to pay attention to all the beautiful things that earth provides us, and the children love sharing new ways to take care of it. The Kindergarten teachers would also like to thank the PTA for the upcoming plant sale next month. Thank you for always supporting our school!
News Report from our First Grade Teachers: Spring has arrived, and excitement is in the air in our first-grade classrooms! As the weather warms and the days grow longer, the children are engaging in a variety of fun and meaningful activities that celebrate the season. In honor of Earth Day, students will participate in activities that promote environmental awareness and sustainability. They will learn about recycling, conservation, animals, and their habitats. They are especially excited to get their hands dirty by planting seeds and exploring the significant role plants play in our ecosystem. In math, students are working on understanding money. Their learning goals include identifying the value of a penny, nickel, and dime, and finding the total value of a group of coins using pennies, nickels, and dimes. They are also looking forward to two exciting upcoming field trips. Students will visit the Tilles Center to see Hare and Tortoise, and the Nassau County Museum to explore the 250 Years of Art on Long Island exhibit. The children are excited for these enriching experiences! Thank you to the PTA for your continued support and all that you do for the students.
News Report from our Second Grade Teachers: Second grade is beginning to study human body-building blocks and nutrition. They are working with measurement of customary units and will start metric units next. They are so excited to be researching famous people for our VIP Day Living Museum.

The third graders have been busy preparing for their first New York State ELA test. Please send your positive vibes to all of our students! They loved celebrating the end of PARP shopping at the PTA Book Fair and with our guest readers as well! The students were so proud to learn that they had won the "Minutes Read" schoolwide contest and were thrilled to receive all of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid goodies! They are enjoying the Booster Thon book, too. What a tremendous start to SPRING!
News Report from our Fourth Grade Teachers: Fourth graders have been busy exploring exciting topics across subjects! In social studies, students are diving into colonial life in New York, learning about how early settlers lived, worked, and built communities. They are discovering how geography, natural resources, and daily life shaped New York during the colonial times. In STEM, our students are getting energized with our “Light It Up” electricity unit! They are learning how electrical circuits work by building simple circuits using wires, batteries, and bulbs. Through hands-on investigations, students are exploring how electricity flows and how to troubleshoot when circuits don’t light up. In celebration of Earth Day, fourth graders are also researching endangered animals. Students are learning about the challenges these animals face, their habitats, and ways people can help protect them. It’s been a bright and engaging time in 4th grade as students connect history, science, and environmental awareness through hands-on learning!
News Report from our Fifth Grade Teachers: Fifth grade students have begun working on their Invention Convention projects, and their final pieces will be proudly displayed at VIP Day! In literacy, they’ve started an exciting new poetry unit, and each student has received their own poetry journal. In science, students have just wrapped up their unit on food chains and food webs. Next month, students will attend an assembly with Legislator Tom McKevitt. Fifth graders will also be visiting Salisbury for a meet-and-greet event as they prepare for middle school.
News Report from our Music Teacher: Mrs. Hughes reports that our musicians are busy preparing for their spring concert on May 21st. The level of talent within our school is staggering. The chorus will be singing music from Broadway, the Beatles songbook, Italian art songbook, and the American Jazz songbook. The 2nd Annual BW Piano Recital was a wonderful success. These talented pianists will perform in what will surely be an inspiring show. Fourth and fifth grade students have begun a stage acting unit, where they are writing an original script, rehearsing with their groups, and perfroming them for their classes. Students are learning how to develop characters, write stage directions, memorize lizes, and perform with clarity and confidence.
News Report from our Reading Teachers: The reading teachers would like to thank the PTA for the wonderful PARP event “We Are Having a Ball with Reading, and the students certainly did. We appreciate and support an endeavor which celebrates reading and gets children excited to read. We certainly recognize the importance of reading at home and applaud your efforts.
