"May is for planting the seeds of knowledge, and June is for watching them bloom."

News Report from our Kindergarten Teachers: May and June are exciting months in kindergarten. Spring is in full swing and summer will be arriving soon!  Kindergarten students are learning about all of the wonderful things that happen this time of year. Some of the things they have been learning about are baby animals, plants, and the  life cycles of butterflies, ladybugs and other insects. It’s been so much fun!

They hope all of the moms had an amazing Mother’s Day! The children put so much love into making the most beautiful cards and gifts for you and hope that you loved them too!  VIP Day was a great success!  Students showed their visitors all of the wonderful things that we have been learning about in kindergarten!

Thank you, PTA, for the plant sale. The children were so excited to buy such beautiful plants. They are looking forward to the Sky Dome Assembly at the end of May!

The students are growing in so many ways and doing a fantastic job getting ready for second grade.  They had a wonderful time visiting the Nassau County Museum of Art to explore their 250 Years of Art on Long Island exhibition. The children took part in engaging activities and created their own artistic sketches. They also enjoyed a fun-filled trip to the Tilles Center to see the live performance of Hare and Tortoise. The annual plant sale was a big hit! The children loved picking out plants to give to the special women in their lives, and their excitement was heartwarming.  Lastly, they want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our incredible PTA for making us feel so appreciated this week. From the beautifully themed snack displays each day to the delicious lunch and unique Barnum Bobcat Coasters! Your kindness and support truly mean the world to them.  The first graders are looking forward to field day and all of the end-of-the-year celebrations.

News Report from our Special Area Teachers:

Library: Students have been working on research projects, atlas/map skills, literary awards, and seasonal literature! We are working towards summer reading goals.

Student Council: The Student Council previously worked with the community and K-Kids on a school clean-up project. Soon, Student Council group members will be inserting paw prints in the fences by the back parking lot, made possible with fundraising efforts. We can't wait to beautify the school with pawsitive power! Additionally, two Student Council board members will be presenting scholarships at East Meadow High School to three former Barnum Woods Students.

K-Kids: May was a meaningful and busy month.  The K-Kids were busy beautifying our school and community. We participated in the Arbor Day Tree ceremony after school at Veterans Memorial Park and collaborated with Student Council to help Friends for a Beautiful East Meadow and other community service groups to clean up our school environment. We are also planting in front of the school to beautify the area and displaying rocks for the K-Kids Rock the World Culture Garden.  Through our pretzel sale and our first ever BW K-Kids Name That Tune Jr we raised$1,300 for the Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center and the kids leaned amazing leadership skills and had a BLAST!  We have our Field of Honor going up next week, and our Children’s Book Drive is ongoing so we can give each child attending East Meadow Community Day a free book.  We have also been recognized by Kiwanis International as a Distinguished Club this year, our Cereal Box Challenge has been recognized with the KI Distinguished Single Service Project Award, and Mrs. Schiller has been recognized Distinguished Club Advisor. Thank you Mrs. Sagnelli and Mrs. Alfano for your help and support in all we do.  Thank you to our Kiwanis Advisor President Donna Goldstein, Key Club, Parent, Kiwanis volunteers, the PTA and Mr. Rosner and the school district for welcoming and supporting our K-Kids.

Our students have been growing all year and now they are blossoming.  Flowers, like minds, bloom when they have been nurtured, and the beauty of blooming is not only in the final result, but in the journey of growth.  So, let us celebrate all of those accomplishments this year and the steps they took along the way, both big and small, that made them possible, and know that it was through this beautiful partnership between parents and educators, that is the PTA, that helped cultivate it.  We are all so grateful for our Barnum Woods Family.
