Welcome to the fifth installment of Mighty Minds of McVey! Our first guest was Aleyna. Aleyna chose to "get smart through art" by creating a wonderful drawing of an ice cream cone. If you look closely, you can see that Aleyna has the ice-cream scoops saying positive things such as, "be kind", "be helpful", and "be nice". Sounds more like NICE cream to us! Seeing our students spread positive messages such as these always makes us so proud. Our next guest was Odalys. Odalys used her mighty mind to show us just how great she is doing with her times tables; she hasn't even started learning them in class yet! We always encourage our students to push themselves and take on challenges; it is clear that Odalys is taking this message seriously. We definitely hope to see Odalys on the show many more TIMES. Our final guest was Logan. Logan decided to use his designing prowess for his "get smart" project. Logan created a paper airplane out of nothing more than a few pieces of paper and some crayons. I'm sure if we were to throw this plane, it would fly non-stop for at least five hours. Patriotic Post of the Week! We know it has been quite some time since we have posted our last patriotic post, but we are back in action and ready to display that nationalistic cheer that is inside all of us here at McVey. Our first picture is of Elaine and Ryan. Just look how well these little ones were holding the flag; great job guys! Next up are Briar Rose and Bella. These adorable girls just couldn't contain their patriotic energy when holding the flag in their photo. Our next picture is of Lauren, Mia, and Macie. These fifth-graders did a wonderful job demonstrating to the little ones how important it is to show one's pride in their country. Our final picture is of Jemimah. Just look at how high she is holding that flag; she looks just like Lady Liberty! A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to pose with our wonderful flag. Welcome to the fourth installment of Mighty Minds of McVey! Our first guests were Alexa, Brianna, Diana, and Jared. This great group of students decided to do some research on one of the greatest ships to ever sail the ocean: The Titanic. The group included facts about the ship's proportions, as well as information about the unforgettable Titanic tragedy. It is so wonderful to see our students interested in an event that happened over a century before they were born. Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet would be unbelievably proud of this stellar project. Our next guest was artistic youngster, Victoria. When Victoria walked in with her beautiful depiction of the Egyptian pyramids, we could not help but exclaim, "PharOH MY GOODNESS!" The details in the cacti, the beautiful usage of colors for the sand and water, and the size of that sun clearly indicate that Victoria is an artist on the rise. We can't wait to see what she does next! Our final guest was Hope. Hope came in with not one, but two Mighty Mind projects; way to go, Hope! Her first project was her artistic rendering of the McVey logo, surrounded by rules that us Mighty Minds live by. Rules such as being a bucket filler, not retaliating, and always doing the right thing seem to be imbedded in Hope's mind. Hope also created a project about baby horses, and who doesn't like baby horses?? We sure HOPE that we are visited again by the awesome Hope! Patriotic Post of the Week: Here at McVey, we take pride for our country very seriously! In order to show off this pride, we are starting a new weekly post in which we highlight our students holding the flag during the Pledge of Allegiance. For this week, we are proud to welcome Kamryn, Jaelyn, Elizabeth, and Armaanjot! All of them looked just fantastic holding the good ol' Stars and Stripes.
Welcome to the third installment of Mighty Minds of McVey! The feedback that we have received for these posts is nothing short of amazing, and it just makes us want to share more and more pictures/descriptions of our students and the variety of projects that they create in order to keep getting smart. Our first guest was Lindsey: a third grader who wanted to show off her amazing math skills! If you like math, then you are divis......ion for a treat. Lindsey created a project in which she demonstrated her prowess, for multiplication and division, by writing down a handful of facts. Knowing how to multiply and divide are super important for our third-grade students and older; we just know that Lindsey is going to impress her teachers with just how much she knows about them. If only Tua and the Dolphins could have multiplied their points to win that game :/ Our second guest was Nathanial: another third-grade student who chose to create a project about the Earth's core. Not only did Nathaniel include layers of the Earth: such as the mantle, outer crust, inner crust, and core, he also provided us with some facts about the core. If you ever want to learn more about the middle of this lovely planet we call home, make core to check out Nathaniel's project! Our final guest was Ryan: a fourth grader who wanted to master test his graphing skills by creating a line graph that depicted the temperatures, in Kerala, India, during the week of December 18th. Ryan graphed his points beautifully, and even included a table, with which we could view the data in a different format. Welcome to the second edition of Mighty Minds of McVey!!! We are so happy you stopped by to check out the most recent Mighty Minds that appeared on the Get Smart Show. The first celebrity on the show was Dylan, a fourth-grade student who utilized his artistic abilities to create a wonderful rendition of the Montauk Lighthouse. The lighthouse is shining so brightly that even Dylan had to close his eyes! We thank you for depicting such a Long Island staple so beautifully. Next up is Jack; Jack is a fifth-grade student who, although was not on the Get Smart show, was asked if his picture could be taken due to his immense about of patriotism during the Pledge of Allegiance. We all love this wonderful country that we live in, and Jack was making sure everyone knew just how strong his love is. If anything were to ever happen to the Statue of Liberty, we vote that the Jack of Liberty be erected in her place. Our final guest was Lily; Lily is a first-grade student who appeared on the show after she decided to "get smart through art." As you can see, Lily chose our very own McVey to be the subject of her masterpiece. If we didn't know any better, we would have tried to open the door that she drew: it's that detailed! We just know that Lily's art skills we continue to get better and better as she continues her hard work and practice. GREAT JOB TO ALL OF OUR GET SMART SHOW GUESTS!! Here at McVey Elementary School, we are always pushing our students to "get smart" whenever they can! One of the ways in which we do this is by holding our daily "Get Smart Show" where students are invited to join the program and show what projects they have been working on in their free time. Here are just a few of the projects that were highlighted this past week:
Allesandra is a third-grade student who chose to "get smart through art." As you can see, Allesandra created a beautiful project where she utilized the McVey logo as the focal point of her work. She added quotes about kindness to remind everyone that treating others with respect and helping out your fellow humans is the best way to live! Great job, Allesandra! We heard The Louvre is considering replacing the Mona Lisa with this artistic masterpiece!
Next up is Alisha: a wonderful fourth grader who created a project about the sun. Alisha included such facts as how big the sun is, how hot it is, and how far away from Earth it is. Can you believe that the sun is 93 million miles away from the Earth?!? Thank you, Alisha, for.........shedding some light on these interesting facts about the biggest star in our solar system!
Finally, McVey students and staff were treated to a wonderful presentation from Alyaan: a second-grade student who created a project about the water cycle. Alyaan included detailed illustrations that went perfectly with the written details that he included. Now everyone at McVey knows that precipitation, runoff, evaporation, and condensation are the four stages of the water cycle. Thanks, Alyaan!

Please spare a kernel of your time and check out these photos from last week. Third-grade students participated in a CORNucopia of activities revolving around-- you guessed it-- CORN! Students participated in fun events such as a STEM challenge revolving around the use of candy corn and toothpicks, a guessing-jar activity (guess the amount of kernels), mapping the US Corn Belt (AKA the most fun states), learning how a corn plant grows, and drawing corn! All of these fun activities stemmed-- or should we say stalked-- from the third graders learning about how the Pilgrims survived due to the corn they took from Native Americans. Great job, third grade!
Happy Thanksgiving to all of our McVey families who celebrate! This Thanksgiving, we are thankful for these wonderful second-grade authors who recently wrapped up their ELA unit on fairy tales. The unit ended with a culminating activity that had the students create their own fairy tales using Flipgrid. Students were then able to share their stories with their classmates. The audiences really.........gobbled up these wonderful creations. Who needs Disney when we have these fantastic fairy tale writers??
On November 8th, the fifth Graders tool on the wilderness at Project Adventure. Working together, they were able to successfully manage nature and a variety of challenges. Working in groups, they moved through a series of hands-on activities designed to develop communication, cooperation, trust, and problem-solving skills in an atmosphere of safety, respect, and fun. Participants are guided in making connections between these activities and "real-life" situations. Teachers report a positive impact on classroom climate, student performance, and interpersonal dynamics when these activities are reinforced in the classroom.
Pumpkin Picking Perfection
On Wednesday 10/25, McVey’s Pre-K and Kindergarten classes ventured outdoors to partake in some pumpkin picking. The students enjoyed games such as cornhole and a scavenger hunt, and each got to select a beautiful plump pumpkin.
A Howling Good Time-
On Monday, Oct. 30th, McVey students enjoyed another terrific Halloween Howl! The Gym was full of children and parents rocking along with the DJ, and the cafeteria was home to pizza, fresh popcorn, and a whole host of other delicious treats. As always, the Spooky Walk in the APR stole the show! This year’s Hogwarts theme was a hit with everyone who was brave enough to venture through its haunted hallways.

The Board of Education wishes to inform you that tomorrow evening, April 19th, at the Board of Education meeting, the Board will be appointing and introducing the new superintendent of schools who will begin service to the community on September 1 of this year. Our new superintendent will be present at the meeting and will be saying a few words.
