The 100th day of school!
This week, our fifth graders stepped into the courtroom for Mrs. Cosolito and Mr. Mentasti’s annual Don Quixote Mock Trial. After weeks of close reading, evidence gathering, and persuasive writing, students put Don Quixote on trial to answer the essential question: Do his good intentions justify his actions? The courtroom was filled with passionate lawyers, confident witnesses, and thoughtful jurors who cited specific scenes from the novel to defend their claims. Students debated whether Don Quixote’s desire to do good made him a hero or whether his reckless choices made him a fool. In the end, the verdicts were split:     •    In two out of three classes, the judges declared Don Quixote a fool, arguing that good intentions cannot excuse harmful or irresponsible actions.     •    In one class, the judge ruled him a hero, emphasizing his courage, imagination, and unwavering belief in doing what he thought was right. Regardless of the verdict, every student demonstrated critical thinking, collaboration, and public speaking skills. This annual tradition continues to bring literature to life, showing that strong readers support their opinions with clear evidence and respectful debate. Bravo to our fifth graders for proving that great stories spark powerful conversations!
