It was an exciting opportunity to bring STEM learning to life.

Our fifth graders had the opportunity to learn about government from Nassau County Legislator Tom McKevitt. During his visit, he spoke with students about the role of local government, the responsibilities of elected officials, and the importance of civic engagement. Fourth-grade Quest students are exploring eco-friendly technology and learning how to create a more sustainable world. Recently, Mrs. Farrell visited our class to share her work with wind turbines and the development of wind farms.
She walked students through the entire process of creating a wind farm—from using computer models to identify the best locations based on wind patterns, to engineers designing roads to reach remote sites, many of which are located in the middle of farmland. Mrs. Farrell also explained the importance of checking local roads and bridges to ensure they can safely support the size and weight of the trucks transporting turbine parts.
Students learned how the energy generated by wind turbines is transferred back to power stations and ultimately delivered to homes and communities. Mrs. Farrell also shared stories from her time traveling for work, including meeting with landowners to discuss land use agreements and working with local towns to gain permission to use their roads.
To celebrate the visit and all they learned, each student received a small windmill to take home!
